Last night, I realized that the maiden issue masthead of Tar Magazine wasn’t individually hand-painted as I first thought, and it took me one year to notice. I hardly ever flipped through the pages since I bought it, but had I known earlier what gem I possess, it wouldn’t have been left undiscovered for a long time.

Tar is a biannual magazine about art and aesthetics with a social awareness, published internationally each fall and spring out of New York since 2008. EIC Evanly Schindler wrote in the first issue’s editorial letter:

The name “tar” is an anagram of art, the distillation of organic matter, the sticky stuff we pave our roads and build our roofs with. tar is a foundation.

The Benicio del Toro-covered issue has rotting mammals, mammary glands and everything unlikely in between. Owning a copy is already pretentious in itself, commenting on its content would be taking it further so I’ll just share some of the things I found interesting.

I wish to read Tar from cover to cover before making any legitimate observation about something so high-class (?), and besides, I have no basis for comparison since I don’t really read these kind of stuff. Banksy’s in there though:D

EDIT: I do have a basis for comparison if the 2009 British Vogue September issue could be considered something at par haha. Lol I read those things when I interned for Hinge-Inquirer, inch-thick September issues or something to that level of every international magazine whose names I can’t pronounce, lying around the office. I was so tempted to bag a few copies, if it wasn’t too bulky;p Anyway, I can’t consider flipping through Vogue ‘reading’, it was more like a guessing game with a fellow intern about which model had a boob job, which were the perkiest, etc.
